Navy SEAL Mike Day Died: On March 27, Douglas “Mike” Day, a highly honored U.S. Navy SEAL who was wounded 27 times while serving in Iraq, passed away. Day spent 21 years in the Navy before working as an author and supporter of injured soldiers.

On April 6, 2007, Day, who was almost finished with his deployment to the Iraqi region of Anbar, was in charge of his SEAL platoon’s raid against an al Qaeda cell in Fallujah. Day broke through the entrance of a room while being followed by two Iraqi scouts. Immediately after, he was shot multiple times, losing control of his rifle.
On the Team Never Quit podcast in 2020, Day said, “I took a left and they just started shooting at me.”

Day shot one of the four attackers in the room as he was on the ground, switching to his pistol. Day also killed the other man as he pulled the pin on a grenade and started running towards the corridor. Mike Day was hurt by the debris when the grenade exploded after it hit the ground. He briefly lost consciousness, but when he came to, he kept shooting the other men in the room with his pistol, even as he was repeatedly hit by AK-47 fire from a distance of fewer than 10 feet away.

Day stated to Fox News in 2015, “After I realized that I actually was getting shot, my second thought was, ‘God get me home to my girls,’ and then there was extreme anger.” “I then simply started working. Muscle recollection was at work. I just carried out my training.

Even though it seemed unlikely, Day was still alive. He used the radio of fellow SEAL Joseph “Clark” Schwedler, who was killed during the assault, to communicate with the rest of his team while also ordering several Iraqi scouts to protect a group of women and children who had been discovered inside the building.

Day didn’t understand the severity of his wounds until later. His limbs, thighs, groin, buttocks, and abdomen had all been pierced by sixteen bullets. His body armor had prevented another 11 from being hit.

Mike Day told Coffee or Die Magazine in 2020, “I didn’t even realize how bad I was hurting until they came in and I saw the looks on their faces. “We all recognize that look.”

Mike Day was swiftly rescued from the battleground, walking unaided to the MEDEVAC helicopter and being flown first to Baghdad, then to Landstuhl, Germany, and finally to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Day recalled to Coffee or Die Magazine, “I wasn’t being macho, but I was afraid if they picked me up, it would just hurt more.”

After receiving the Navy Cross, two Bronze Stars, and Purple Heart, Day subsequently left the Navy in 2010. He subsequently went on to work for the US Special Operations Command for seven years as a wounded warrior advocate. 2020 saw the release of Day’s book, “Perfectly Wounded.”

Day stated in 2020 for Coffee or Die Magazine that “when you go through something together, or similar, it’s a bond, even if you didn’t do it together.” After experiencing trauma, individuals develop an incredible amount of resilience.
