Google to Manufacture Pixel 8 in India: Google is set to join the ‘Make in India’ initiative by shifting the manufacturing of its Pixel 8 smartphones to Indian soil in 2024. This strategic move is aimed at strengthening Google’s presence in the Indian smartphone market. The Pixel 8, the upcoming flagship device, will lead this manufacturing effort in collaboration with both international and domestic manufacturers. This shift in production location, however, may not necessarily translate into substantial price reductions for consumers.
Taking Apple’s example of iPhone production in India into account, it becomes evident that local manufacturing doesn’t always lead to significantly lower prices. Apple’s iPhone 15, produced in India, didn’t see a substantial drop in prices. This approach aligns with Apple’s commitment to maintaining a premium user experience, even if it means maintaining a premium price.

Google is likely to follow a similar path, and expecting a significant price decrease for the Pixel 8 may be unrealistic. Google’s strategy in India, which includes the introduction of the Pixel A series for users seeking a high-quality experience at a more affordable price, hints at a consistent pricing approach for its flagship Pixel devices.
Furthermore, a Google executive, in an interview, expressed no plans for a budget-friendly Pixel smartphone in the future. This decision stems from concerns that compromises to reduce costs could negatively impact the device’s quality and user experience.

Conclusion:
Google’s decision to produce the Pixel 8 in India signifies a significant step in its engagement with the Indian market. While lower pricing is not guaranteed, the competitive nature of the Indian smartphone market and the historical trend of price reductions after a product’s launch could offer Indian consumers increased affordability options in the near future.
