Apple Intelligence: Introduction
At the June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple introduced iOS 18, showcasing a new suite of AI-driven features called “Apple Intelligence.” This innovation brings enhanced capabilities to iPhones, such as on-device image generation, a more advanced Siri powered by ChatGPT, automatic call recording, transcription, and more. With these updates, Apple is making iPhones even more intuitive, blending AI with daily tasks to improve user experience.
Compatibility of Apple Intelligence
Historically, Apple has ensured that its new software updates are available on a broad range of iPhone models, even those a few years old. However, not all iPhone users will be able to enjoy Apple Intelligence. While iOS 18 will be compatible with over 20 iPhone models, the more advanced AI-powered features are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Why Apple Intelligence is Limited to Pro Models
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, launched alongside the Pro models, do not support Apple Intelligence. The reason behind this is hardware limitations. The Pro models are equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and at least 8 GB of RAM, both essential for running these AI features. The non-Pro models lack this advanced hardware, making them unable to handle Apple Intelligence.
Future Expansion with iPhone 16 Series
There are rumors that the upcoming iPhone 16 series, which will include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will feature the A18 chip and at least 8 GB of RAM. If true, this means that Apple Intelligence could become available across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, expanding access to these AI features.

Apple Intelligence on Other Devices
Apple is also extending Apple Intelligence to other devices within its ecosystem. The AI features are already available on iPads and Macs powered by the Apple Silicon M1 chip or newer, such as the M1/M2 MacBook Air and Mac mini. By doing so, Apple ensures that these cutting-edge AI capabilities are accessible to a wider range of users while maintaining a focus on privacy with secure cloud computing technology.
In summary, while Apple Intelligence represents a significant leap in AI-driven technology, its full potential will initially be available only on the most advanced iPhone models, with hopes of wider availability shortly.
